TCM: Navel Veins Sickness (脐部脉络病) — What It Means
In TCM, the navel (Shenque 神阙 / CV8) is a major gateway of:
-
Yuan Qi (source qi)
-
Kidney qi
-
Spleen yang
-
Body fluids & channels
-
Blood vessels and collaterals (脉络)
When TCM speaks of “navel vein sickness”, it refers to pathology in the vessels, collaterals, qi and blood flow around the umbilicus.
This is not a Western medical term — in TCM it includes several patterns involving stagnation, deficiency or cold invading the navel area.
🔍 TCM Understanding: Why the Navel Area Gets Sick
1. Cold Invading the Navel (寒凝脐腹) — most common
Cold contracts → blood cannot flow → pain or tightness.
Symptoms:
-
Navel pain better with warmth
-
Cold lower abdomen
-
Diarrhea or loose stool
-
Cold limbs
-
Fear of cold wind on abdomen
Common in: women after menses, postpartum, swimming, sleeping with aircon directly on stomach.
2. Qi Stagnation Around Navel (脐周气滞)
Emotions, stress, or Liver qi stagnation → qi cannot move → distension.
Symptoms:
-
Tightness or bloating around belly button
-
Moving or twisting pain
-
Belching, sighing
-
PMS irritability
3. Blood Stasis Around Navel (脐周瘀血)
Poor circulation → sharp, fixed pain.
Symptoms:
-
Sharp stabbing pain
-
Pain worse when pressing
-
Dark or purplish umbilicus
-
Pain after surgery (e.g., laparoscopy scar)
4. Dampness Accumulation (湿困脐腹)
Spleen qi weak → damp collects around abdomen.
Symptoms:
-
Soft navel pain
-
Feeling heavy in body
-
Sticky stools
-
Oily face or fatigue
5. Kidney Qi Deficiency (肾气虚)
Because the navel is closely linked to Kidney via Du & Ren mai.
Symptoms:
-
Weakness around navel
-
Cold low back
-
Low libido
-
Fatigue
-
Frequent urination
