8 Types of Ginseng — Don’t Take the Wrong One!

  1. Danshen (Salvia root):
Promotes blood circulation and removes blood stasis.
Suitable for those with blocked heart vessels or acne problems.

  2. Dangshen (Codonopsis root):
Tonifies the middle and replenishes Qi.
Suitable for those with weak spleen and stomach or Qi deficiency.

  3. Renshen (Ginseng root):
    Strongly replenishes vital Qi.
Suitable for those who are physically weak, Qi deficient, or recovering from long illness.

  4. Shashen (Adenophora or Glehnia root):
Nourishes Yin and generates body fluids, moistens the lungs, and stops cough.
Suitable for those with both lung Qi and Yin deficiency.

  5. Xuanshen (Scrophularia root):
Nourishes kidney Yin and clears heat, cools the blood.
Not suitable for those with weak spleen and stomach due to its cold nature.

  6. Hongshen (Red Ginseng):
    Tonifies Yang Qi.
Suitable for those with cold limbs and Yang deficiency.
It is made by steaming Ginseng, making it warmer in nature than raw Ginseng.

  7. Taizishen (Pseudostellaria root):
Tonifies Qi and nourishes Yin, slightly mild in nature.
Suitable for those with spleen and lung Qi-Yin deficiency.

  8. Xiyangshen (American Ginseng):
Tonifies Qi and nourishes Yin, but compared to Asian Ginseng, it’s more Yin-nourishing and cooling.
Known as the “fire-free ginseng” — it clears internal heat and doesn’t cause overheating.
